Year was 1966.. Our non playing captain was I think Naresh Kumar . The team had Premjit Lal and Joydeep Mukherjea and Ramanathan Krishnan. ..India had defeated West Germany in the quarter finals in Delhi ( the great Wilhelm Bungert was felled) and then went on to beat Brazil in Calcutta in the semis. ( Thomas Koch of Brazil was beaten too and he was seeded high) I was not even a teenager then but I still remember the electrifying moments at the end when India entered the challenge round for the first time. And Calcutta All India Radio broadcast Tagore's immortal victory song 'joyojatrai jao go, utho joyorothe tobo' ' .. Go on your journey towards victory, climb on your victory chariot'.. Tagore of course wrote this song for our freedom fighters but Calcutta station played it in this occasion too. (Sorry Jack , got a bit carried away. )
