The highest ranking Commissioned Officer is the Field Marshal and only two have been awarded this rank so far. The rank of General is held by the Chief of Army Staff, followed by Lieutenant-General, Major-General, Brigadier, Colonel, Lieutenant-Colonel, Major, Captain, and finally the Lieutenant.

The highest serving actual rank in army, navy, air force are General,Admiral and Air Chief Marshal. All current chiefs hold this rank. However, highest ranks that can be awarded are Field Marshal,Admiral of the Fleet and Marshal of the Indian Air Force. These are given to outstanding Generals(or equivalents) considering their glorious contribution to the country. We have had only two Field Marshals( KM Kariappa and SHFJ Manekshaw) and one Marshal of the IAF (Arjan Singh). No one has been appointed as Admiral of the Fleet yet. In any case these ranks do not have any command or executive powers, it is more of a status.
