Lifetime, the cable channel that has for years strengthened women by providing them woeful tales of former sitcom actresses overcoming domestic abuse, will at last lend their skills of empowerment to uplift the African-American community with what is basically the Lifetime equivalent of the right to vote: an all-black remake of Steel Magnolias, the 1989 film that proved that women were both strong, like a metal alloy, and beautifully delicate, like a flower. Get it? The original, based on the Robert Harling play, starred Sally Field, Dolly Parton, Shirley McLaine, Daryl Hannah, Olympia Dukakis, and Julia Roberts, all of whom are white people. Reportedly, the TV movie producers' plan is to fix that and sign "a similarly high-wattage cast of black actresses," which might be somewhat difficult considering this is a Lifetime movie. These guys really think whoever the black Julia Roberts is will want to do a Lifetime movie? Come on
