The Amorphophallus titanum, the worlds biggest flower, lives a very odd life. Although the plant can live up to 80-100 years, it only blooms once and that is just before it dies. When the plant, also known as the corpse flower or the Queen of the Andes, blooms hundreds of white flowers along its 40 ft height and give off a foul smell variously described as resembling rotting eggs, a dead elephant, an outhouse in sweltering heatand worse (hence the name: corpse flower). Although deterring humans, the stench attracts carrion beetles from miles around who pollinate the plant. Found in the mountains of Peru and Bolivia, the Queen of the Andes was discovered in 1878 by Odoardo Beccari, an Italian botanist, while he rootled around in the Samatra rainforest.
