Bhopal is said to have been founded by the Parmar King Bhoj-2 (10001055), who had his capital at Dhar. The city was originally known as Bhojpal named after Bhoj and the dam ('pal') that is said to have been constructed by him to form the lakes surrounding the city.

Some bhoopati shah raja ruled this city. This name means one 'who nurtures the land' which is a derivative of bhoopati shah. It appears he was the first king to name the place as Bhojpal,
