The award winning movie Saathiya is a remake of the Tamil movie Alaipayuthey (2000) directed by Mani Ratnam. The film Alaipayuthey starred R. Madhavan and Shalini in lead roles which were played in Hindi by Viveik Oberoi and Rani Mukherjee respectively. The cameos played by Shahrukh Khan and Tabu in Saathiya were played by Arvind Swamy and Khushboo respectively in the original version.
