Jodhabai was a Rajput pricess. She was the eldest daughter of Amber's Raja Bhar Mal and one of the three wives of Mughal emperor Akbar. She was born on October 1, 1542. Though she is referred to by modern-day historians as Jodhabai, that is a misnomer. Her name at birth was Hira Kunwari (also spelt Heera Kunwari). She was popularly called Harkha Bai. After her marriage to Akbar, she came to be known as Maan Kunwari and Mariam-uz-Zamani. She was the mother of Akbar's son Jahangir (also known as Salim).

Jodhaa was never called by this name during her lifetime. She was born as Hira Kunwar. As you may have seen in the movie, she was the eldest daughter of Raja Bhar Mal of Amber. Hira married Akbar on January 20, 1562 at a place called Sambhar, close to Jaipur. Jodhaa was the third wife of Akbar and one of his prominent queens. She was elder to Akbar by 23 days.
As shown in the movie, it is true that Jodhaa was one woman whom Akbar truly loved. She was also actively involved with the affairs of the state until her daughter-in-law Nurjahan(wife of Jahangir, Jodhaas son) became the empress. In 1586, Jodhaa arranged the marriage of her son Prince Salim(who later became Jehangir) to princess Manmati. Jodhaa passed away in the year 1611. A step well was constructed by her son Jahangir, as her dying wish. Her tomb lies on the Delhi-Agra National Highway near Fatehpur Sikhri.
