Hemis Monastery is the largest, oldest and wealthiest Buddhist monastery in India. Its known to be existing before the 11th centaury and was re-established in 1672 by the then Ladakh King. It is the headquarter of the Drukpa order and all the monasteries in Ladakh region. It preserves a huge collection of ancient statues, sacred thangkas(scroll paintings), and various precious artifacts.
