Most every airplane that I have had experience with has fuel tanks in the wings. They are baffled to prevent "sloshing" of the fuel during flight and/or maneuvers. The next time you go to the airport, you might get a shot of them fueling one of the jet liners. The main reason for their being in the wings is to maintain a consistent center of gravity. The full tanks are positioned so that a full tank or a relatively empty tank gives the same center of gravity - this allows the pilot to expend all of the fuel without worrying about the CG changing.
