The name Whitney is of Anglo-Saxon origin recorded in the Doomsday book in 1086 with a slightly different spelling. Originally referring to a small island surrounded by streams. In 1635 John Whitney sailed from England to America and settled there thus the name developed in the US. However, the English origins remain strong and the Whitney family name survives in the country of Herefordshire in the UK.
