Gir is protected by the efforts of the wildlife activists, the government forest department, and NGOs. In the early 1900s it was the nawab of the princely state of Junagad who declared the lions of Gir forest as protected. Then its population had numbered to merely a number of 15 through slaughter for trophy hunting. A number of 359 was recorded as the lion- count in the April 2005 census.
