Sir, the Mayweather Vs De La Hoya was middleweight, and that is boxing's single highest earning event!
But then heavyweight titles take precedence by and large due to the historical evolution of boxing and also due to the most number of boxing celebrities present in th heavyweight rank. All the legends in boxing history r heavyweights.
John L. Sullivan (first boxing champ of the world), Joe Louis, Muhammed Ali, George Foreman, Joe Frazier, Mike Tyson, Evander Holyfield....are all recognized celebrities in the heavyweight categories. More celebrity presence = more fame.
Also, n present trend....a lot of talented middleweight / flyweight / bantamweight boxers of today branch out into MMA (Mixed Martial Arts).
Heavyweight is also the oldest weight category in boxing. Before we had the Marquees of Queensbury rules were put in place, it was not uncommon for someone weighing in at 150lbs to take on someone who weighs in 250lbs. U may want to look into the Bill Richardson Vs ...more

It is the brute POWER of Heavy Weight category that fascinate over speed and skill. Its explosive best, heavyweight boxing can be dazzling.
Anyone who watched Mike Tyson knock out Michael Spinks or Trevor Berbick would have been amazed that a man could generate such power.
And the incomparable Muhammad Ali - fleet of foot and quick of hand - proved that grace and style will always have a part to play even at the top weight.
