In 1631, Shah Jahan, emperor during the Mughal empire's period of greatest prosperity, was grief-stricken when his third wife, Mumtaz Mahal, died during the birth of their 14th child, Gauhara Begum.Construction of the Taj Mahal began in 1632.] The court chronicles of Shah Jahan's grief illustrate the love story traditionally held as an inspiration for Taj Mahal. The principal mausoleum was completed in 1648 and the surrounding buildings and garden were finished five years later.

Actual history is obscure because when moguls sacked and destroyed the original temple they also destroyed lot of historical evidence associated with it. ASI has more info on this, but they do not give info to anyone.

The Taj Mahal in Agra in Northern India was built in 1632-48 on the orders of Shah Jahan as a monumental tomb (mausoleum) for his favourite wife, Mumtaz Mahal.
It's widely regarded as one of the most outstanding works of Indian architecture and in 1983 was declared a UNESCO World Heritage site.

The grave of Shah Jahan was added to it later. The queens real name was Arjumand Banu. In the tradition of the Mughals, im ...more
