As I am close to North Pole,I can tell you one thing.If you intend to experience polar region,Alaska is your best bet.It is the closest place where general travellers can afford to reach.If not,one needs to go North of Canada to reach Resolute Bay(Nunavut) which is actually an extension of arctic. South pole is a bit away from human habitation.Closest would be like the southern tip of Argentina.I guess they have some islands farther south too.
