Online transactions are safe, but u need to take certain precautions.
one, if you are using a public computer, it might be infested with trojans, spyware, keyloggers etc, which can record whatever u are typing and can send this information to their own websites. This is the most risky situation.
two, if you are using a safe computer(with some reputed anti-virus installed etc, i prefer avg, it's free), then u need to double check to which site you are entering your credit card details. for example, if you are transacting with bsnl, or amazon or microsoft or any reputed site, no problem, but if you are on some sites that exist primarily to steal your info, beware.
three, use some cards that exist for a short time. i don't know whether other banks are provinding or not, but i am using "netsafe" from hdfc. we login to their website, create a new card with a pre-fixed amount(if's our wish, in any amount), and then we can use that 'card' number and transact online. the card number i ...more
