Rajasthan is the largest state in India in terms of area. It is located in the western part of the country. The state encompasses the Thar Desert. It is located to the east of Pakistan, to the northeast of Gujarat, to the northwest of Madhya Pradesh, to the southwest of Uttar Pradesh and Haryana and to the south of Punjab. The capital of Rajasthan is Jaipur. Mount Abu is Rajasthan's only hill-station and is famous for the Dilwara Temples, a place of pilgrimage for the Jain community. Many tribes (including the Rajputs, who were great warriors) have contributed significantly in the unification of a number of princely states, including Mewar and Marwar, into one large state called Rajasthan. In fact, Rajasthan literally means 'king's place'. It is known for its lakes and palaces.
