The Setu project is coming up on the sea but it is by no means a SagarManthan. The Suez project was far more ambitious. This project has been made much of for political reasons. The BJP which had launched it when it was in power stood up against it when it went out of power hoping that it would help it to come back in power. It is not an engineering marvel since it consists of breaking up some under water rocks. Also it is not going to introdc a revolution in water transport. The major steamers would continue to in the eyxisting sea route. It would only help small and medium to negotiate the route.Since it is not calculated to bring about any major atmospheric or oceanic changes it will not affect the fisheries. On the other hand it may help shore trade since the passing traffic may prove good customers to the shore people.Ram once freed India from the tyrant Ravan and not people swearing by him are using his name to keep India away from benefit.

Viewed against the environmental problems including harsher effct of Tsunami, the advantage is much less compared to the absence of it. Might be , at best it will offer some employment opportunity for TN people. Expert advise is against its execution. Political can be illogical as in many instances.
