The white coat has served as the pre-eminent symbol of physicians for over 100 years. At virtually every medical school, the first symbolic act is the "White Coat Ceremony" originated by Arnold P. Gold, MD. This is the ceremonial "cloaking" of a doctor-to-be as she or he embarks on a medical career .The history of the black coat dates back to 17th century England when robes adopted in 1685 were the symbolic of mourning for King Charles II. It was believed that gowns and wigs gave a degree of anonymity to judges and lawyers. In India, the Advocates Act 1961 makes it mandatory for advocates appearing in the supreme court., high courts, subordinate courts, tribunals or authorities to wear a dress that is sober and dignified. The dress code is not merely a status symbol, but brings out discipline among lawyers and gives them the confidence to fight for justice. The dress code also differentiates the lawyers from other professionals.

White coat ceremonies are a recent phenomenon in medical education.Selected as a symbol to impress upon medical students the importance of compassion and humility, the white coat has had a long association with all things medical, scientific, and healing. It is also associated with the attributes of purity and goodness traditionally symbolized by the color white. Thus, its selection as the material focus of the white coat ceremony seems natural.Wearing the white coat, the occupational clothing of a prestigious group with substantial power over human lives, may actually promote unselfconsciousness rather than remind physicians to show compassion and humility.

Black is the color of authority and power. Black also implies submission. Priests wear black to signify submission to God. So is the case with lawyers. Their submissions are towards justice. It brings out discipline among lawyers and gives them the confidence to fight for justice.

Very qood question Sir. I think doctors have to keep their coat hygenic because it is related to patients and his health. Also they are getting lot of money as fees and salary. So they can afford daily cleaning of their coat.

Regarding advocates, i think we have more than sufficient Advocates in our judiciary system. So it is not necessary that they will have work every time. Also their fees or income is depend upon their cleverness ,knowledge & bargaining power which we cannot apply to all advocates. So it is not easy for them to clean the coat on daily basis. :))))))
