The eastern bank of river Yamuna at Agra is adorned by a succession of beautiful gardens of great luxuriance and vast extent. Adorned by fruit trees, the air refreshed by numerous fountains and the marble pavilions offering repose to those who delight to revel in all the pomp of oriental luxury. Jahanara Bagh is the name given to one of these delightful retreats.

This fabulous garden was constructed by emperor Jehangirs favourite wife Nur Jahan in 1621. The main entrance to the garden was from the landward side and a wide pathway led through the centre of the garden to the main building which faced the river. The terraced building with a few chambers was flanked by two octagonal towers crowned with double storied chattris(cupolas) as you can see in the engraving. The emperor and beloved would sit atop one of these cupolas and enjoy the magnificent view of the river at the same time listening to chirping of the birds in the beautiful garden behind them. There were also two flight of steps leading to the river. The entire structure in red sandstone is intricately engraved in the Mughal style.

Unfortunately this structure today is in a state of decay with one of the towers missing and the gardens totally neglected. The only way to get some idea of its past glory is to view it from a boat.
