I think it really depends on the situation and what's available.",

Usually, like you, I'll start with songs that relate to how I feel then I'll listen to something upbeat and powerful. It gives me that chance to just cry and let it out, but I am then given power and that music high feeling that just makes me feel better. It reminds me of the good times and I realize that everything will be okay.

My most recent experience of this was just last week actually. I was home alone, and my crush of way-too long had just rejected me. I first listened to "The End of the World" by The Carpenters, then I listened to "Title and Registration" by Death Cab for Cutie. I ended my pity pout by crying to Beethoven's "Moonlight Sonata". After some of that, I was just done being upset. I turned on Coldplay's "Waterfall", and I experienced maybe my best music high ever. It was like, whatever was happening today, I just knew, if only for that moment, everything is going to be okay.

Generally old songs from fifties to seventies. There are some good songs in the eighties. Ninties was a good period for music in hindi cinema. The first decade of the twenty first century was also quite good. The current period is OK, but overall eventhough the quality of the musical notes & sounds has improved by leaps & bounds the poetry in songs has suffered. There are few good numbers like "Badmateez Dil" but overall the poetry in others leave a lot to be desired.
I like music of any kind provided it is melodious with decent poetry.
