Somali pirates who took a multi-million dollar ransom for hijacked Indian freighter MT Asphalt Venture, have refused to release seven of the 15 Indian crew members held as hostages, in the first such step by sea-brigands. They have demanded release of their colleagues who are in Indian custody. Somali pirates have been making headline news these days. The increasing threat posed by piracy has caused concern in India since most of its shipping trade routes pass through the Gulf of Aden. The purpose of piracy is to get ransom money for release of the crew, ship, and cargo. It is funded not just by record-breaking ransoms and local investors money, but also by the flow of capital from foreign criminal gangs. Though it is an international menace, our country has more at stake because substantial number of seafarers around the world, even on foreign-flagged ships is Indians.
