Any vehicle that combines two or more sources of power directly or indirectly to move the vehicle is a hybrid. We\'re still far from hybrid cars.

The hybrids are configured in many ways - Parallel, Serial, PHEV, Fuel cell etc. Most hybrid cars available are petrol-electric hybrids. The main purpose of this complicated vehicle is to reduce emissions and get a better mileage.

Toyota Prius and Honda Civic hybrid are examples.

Hybrid vehicles use two or more distinct power sources to run the vehicle.
Fluid power hybrid use an engine to charge a pressure accumulator to drive the wheels via hydraulic or pneumatic (i.e. compressed air) drive units.
A series hybrid uses electric drives powered by a single-speed internal combustion engine.
Those two are somewhat efficient than other types.

Ms. Kalyani has already explained what are hybrids. I am giving an example of efficient hybrid. Delta Air Lines is going to be turning their Boeing 737NGs into hybrids in early 2010 by mounting the WheelTug ground propulsion system on their fleet of Boeing 737NGs . By using the APU, which is powered by a turbine, to power a Chorus Motor mounted on the landing gear for ground movement, Delta Air Lines will be creating a hybrid configuration by ceasing to use the main engines for anything but flight and take-off.
