Rihand reservoir has been formed as a result of dam constructed across Rihand river (also known as Rond or Renu river) which was commissioned in 1962 near village Pipri in District Mirzapur, Uttar Pradesh. The Rihand River is the tributary of Sone river. The confluence of river Rihand with the River Sone lies 45 km downstream of the dam site at a place known as Chopan. Sone river ultimately joins River Ganga.
The Rihand Dam was constructed across the river in 1962 for hydropower generation; the reservoir impounded behind the dam is called Govind Ballabh Pant Sagar.
