Rice milling industry generates a lot of rice husk during milling of paddy which comes from the fields. This rice husk is mostly used as a fuel in the boilers for processing of paddy. Rice husk is also used as a fuel for power generation. Rice husk ash is about 25% by weight of rice husk when burnt in boilers!!

Importance of rice husk
Around 20% of the paddy weight is husk. In 2008 the world paddy production was 661 million tons and consequently 132 million tons of rice husk were also produced. While there are some uses for rice husk it is still often considered a waste product in the rice mill and therfore often either burned in the open or dumped on wasteland. Husk has a high calorific value and therefore can be used as a renewable fuel.

Its a source of energy in rural areas, it is used for insulation of molten metal in tundish and ladle in slab caster and in Kerala is used as tooth powder, known as Ummi kari

Rice mills in Koppal district might soon be sitting happy, following an experiment in local generation with their waste product, rice husk as fuel.
Reducing crippling monthly power bills for each mill of Rs 70,000 to next to nothing, the plan drawn up by the Karnataka Cleaner Production Centre (KCPC) is to use a 100-KVA gasifier for each rice mill in the area where usage is between 75 and 140 KVA. The average rice husk generated in each of the 140 mills in the area is 85 tonnes per month, 50 per cent of which is needed for the gasifier.
