1.
Mathematics (and its very successful daughter, Computer Science), is the backbone of our modern day technology which is essentially mathematical technology. Mathematics continues to play a vital role in the development of many areas of technology such as computer tomography, robotics, aeronautics, space science, semiconductor technology and material science. The encompassing subject, that reaches far beyond its own specialty, is something like a common language since it creates the possibility of communication between the natural sciences and the engineering sciences and, more and more, also the economic and social sciences :- a key technology of our times. In this regard the need to organise and create fundamental and useful research in mathematics should be paramount in the developmental strategic and research plan of any society.
