Howard Roark the main protagonist in this book is very idealistic and does not compromise his ideas for fame or money. He goes through various trials and tribulations right from being thrown out of college, loosing jobs and even the girl he loves but does not loose his integrity or independent spirit. The word "selfishness" and "selflessness" are not used to refer to what they are commonly used as, rather she uses the term selfish to mean remaining true to ones ideals against influence of others. His lady love Dominique initially believes that talent and genius like his will never be recognized by the masses who only understand mediocrity and is bound to fail. By the end of the novel she no longer cares about what others think. Finally she realizes happiness lies in the act of creation rather than whether one gets recognition for it and she reunites with Roark. To sum it up this book revolves around the theme of the value of the human ego and the need to remain true to oneself.
