A tiger census published late in March two thousand and eleven estimated that there are one, seven hundred and six tigers roaming free in India. Although this figure is very low, it is good news, as the census indicates there are two hundred and ninety-five more than the last time Indian tigers were counted, in two thousand and six.',

According to reports, there were forty, zero tigers in India a century ago. The country is home to forty% of the world's tigers, with twenty-three tiger reserves in seventeen states. The two thousand and six count found a steep fall in India's tiger population to one, four hundred and eleven from three, six hundred and forty-two animals in a federal census in two thousand and two. Poaching and urbanisation are blamed for the decline in tiger numbers in the country.

A population is a summation of all the organisms of the same group or species, who live in the same geographical area, and have the capability of interbreeding.[1][2]
In ecology, the population of a certain species in a certain area is estimated using the Lincoln Index. The area that is used to define a sexual population is defined as the area where inter-breeding is potentially possible between any pair within the area. The probability of interbreeding is greater than the probability of cross-breeding with individuals from other areas. Under normal conditions, breeding is substantially more common within the area than across the border.[3]
