Some metal elements are very expensive because there is very little of the element on earth (or in earth) and the element is very difficult to extract and convert into metallic form (with a few exceptions, metals exist in the earth's crust as minerals, e.g., Al exists as bauxite, Al2O3). Near the top of this list is Francium (Fr, atomic # 87). Scientists estimate that there is about 1 ounce of Fr in the entire planet earth. So, if you wanted a piece of Fr, it would cost you a LOT of money.
