'Stan' as a suffix is an abode, address at which dwell the word preceding 'Stan' ... Pak+ Stan = Pakistan, where Pak means 'pious' and together with stan it becomes Pakistan or 'where dwell the Pious or the address or abode of the Pious.
For Afghistan: Where live the Afghans. Kazakhistan = where live the Kazakhs (a tribe). Gulistan = a garden, where live Guls (Flowers). Kabristan = where there are kabars (graves).
