Some quarter horse individuals can go up to 55 mph, however this is only a few select fast horses. The racing quarter horses have been trained to run extremely fast, seeing as the races they run are all around 1/4 of a mile. Of course, other breeds can't go as fast as a quarter horse. Thoroughbreds can only run up to about 35 mph, and some breeds even slower. Most breeds are not used for racing so they don't have an average top speed for the breed. Your friend is right, quarter horses have been clocked at 55-57 mph at the utmost in some individuals. This skill at short fast sprints has made them the fastest breed in the world in short distances.
