Guts to be ALONE... and being comfortable at being so!
It is the urge to conform to a GROUP that often destroys independance. When u want to conform to ur religion, caste, ideology, political party, belief system etc, u cant be independent.
Another factor is that u cant afford to lead a negative life. For instance u cant exploit others or allow others exploit you. U cant be gready, because gread makes u slave of money. U cant be an alcoholic, u cant be a womeniser, u cant be a drug addict. So u see... there are many factors. To be independent is not an easy task. That's why very few people are independent.

Free from the influence, guidance, or control of another or others; self-reliant

An Independent Person is someone who doesn't always need others. Others includes influence, guidance, control, etc. You can rely on yourself, instead of constantly looking to others for affirmation, or to help you. You can fend for yourself, and you can do so well.

An independent-minded person appears bestowed with such charming idiosynocracies very rare to be found in common people. That person, as far as I can presume, never allows himself/herself to be guided by others' influence of any
nature.A stern supporter of justice, that person really cares the least to lose anything to face the reality of justice.Fortunate are those who have the priviledge to be with such peeople to interact, to take decisions, to make plans.

Having emotional maturity to make your own decisions after studying consequences and being prepared to be accountable for your actions. When you can do that and not expect someone else to bail you out , then you are truly independent.
