Taxila is a town and an important archaeological site in Rawalpindi district of the Punjab province in Pakistan. Taxila is situated about thirty two km north-west of Islamabad and Rawalpindi; just off the famous Grand Trunk Road

This centre of learning was situated about 50 km west of Rawalpindi in Pakistan. It was an important Vedic/Hindu and Buddhist center of learning. It was not a well organized university like Nalanda.

At least 2,800 years ago, circa 800BCE, there existed a giant University at Takshashila (often called Taxila), a town located in the north-western region of India (in todays Pakistan). According to references in the Ramayana, King Bharata founded the town in the name of his son, Taksha.
