Once Santkumar visits Kalagni Rudra and asks him about the three lines of Tripund. He asks Kalagni Rudra to give him knowledge about the importance of Tripund and the right way to do it. He asks about the apparatus and the procedure to make this tilak on ones forehead.

Santkumar also asks him about the importance of Tripund and the various qualities that it possesses. Kalagni Rudra replies by saying that ashes from a fire have to be used to make the three lines of Tripund. He also says Lord Brahmas mantras should be used on these ashes before using them. Five such elemental ashes are Agniriti, Vayuriti, Jalmiti, Sthalmiti and Vayometi.

The ashes after being influenced by the mantras should be rubbed on the forehead, neck, shoulders and heart. While doing this, Triyambakam Yaha Mahe mantra should be recited. This rpocedure has been given in almost all the Vedas and is considered to best way to attain salvation. This should be practised regularly.
