Shiva means shav(dead body) & shakti(power the soul). (SHIVA=SHAV+SHAKTI). The meaning of SHIVALING is the SEXUAL POSITION of Shiva (the father who gives body to his child) and Shakti (the mother who gives the power of life that is soul to live life). A child belongs to whatever religion, community , race, sex ,etc., The child will be borned(originated) by their parents when their parents will perform the SEXUAL POSITION of SHIVALING . It is the power of blessing given by the god to livingbeing to give birth of their child . So, the meaning of SHIVALING is the SEXUAL POSITION(joint form) of the SHIVA (body) and SHAKTI (life) . And a living being can exists only when it consists both that is SHIVA &SHAKTI in the form of body & soul and that a living being will get from his/her mother and father.

We have read striling and pulling in hindi and sanskrit . can anybody say its meaning.....? ling means sign. striling means sign of stri(women) and pulling means a sign of purush(men). the very similarly shiv ling or jyotirling means the sign of shiva who is light who creates, nourishes and destroys the whole universe. this is not what you people are thinking that it is a sex organ or something else........ so please dont misunderstand or abuse hindu religion for god sake.

'Linga', means 'form.' When un-manifest energy begins to manifest itself, the first form is always the Linga. When a person comes to a deep state of meditativeness within himself, the spiritual energy of the person naturally takes the shape of a Linga. It is with this understanding that Lingas came to be revered and worshipped in India right from the pre-Vedic times. A linga is a perfect ellipsoid.

Scientifically, this shape is the only shape that can serve as a perennial storehouse of energy.

The first form of creation is an ellipsoid. Today modern cosmologists are saying that the core of every galaxy is in the form of an ellipsoid. There are many pictures that show just this. Yoga has always been saying, the first and final form is a Linga. If you become meditative, your energies will naturally take the form of a Linga.

The final form before dissolution is also a Linga. So a Linga is held as a doorway to the beyond, whether you go this way or that way. Both ways, before dis ...more

Ling is related to Sex organ and Gender. You may have heard in Hindi speaking Streeling Pulling. Yes Shivling means the sex organ ( Penis) of Shiva. And if you observe the shape of it which is worshiped it the same. But many ignorant Hindus hide it But I dont understand why? When do it do it with courage

Shiva Linga is the holy symbol of Lord Shiva that is considered sacred by the devotees of Lord Shiva. The word, Lingum in Sanskrit means, symbol. Shiva Lingum, therefore means symbol of Lord Shiva and is therefore considered most sacred by Shaivaites. Siva Linga has been worshipped in Hinduism since ages. Worship of Shiva Linga is regarded sacred and superior Shiva Mahapurana. This is because the form makes worship simple while maintaining the truth that God does not have any definite form.

Earlier shiva lings were conical in shape and they don't depict male organ. The despict the never ending source of power - a pillar of power which is endless - and because humans cannot make endless pillar so they made a small symbol of it. And as long as ur question of worshiping shiva linga instead of Murti is considered, then i must tell u that we ( humans ) started carving murtis (idol) only lately. earlier humans didn't had tools to make murti. Worshiping murti is new form of worshipping.. the oldest shiva linga are 6000 yrs old (proof with carbon dating are available in national archives in USA) and at that time no one could carved any structure. So in Shiva shiv linga is symbol for source of power which was conical but with time people made it spherical from top
