The Mssbauer spectra of pyroaurite-sjgrenite-type compounds (PTC) (layered anion exchangers) are discussed with reference to the crystal structure, cation order, and crystallite morphology. It is shown that cation-ordered layers are produced in the synthesis of carbonate and sulphate types of green rust. In contrast, synthetic and natural pyroaurite only occurs as disordered types. The redox chemistry of Fe(III) within the metal hydroxide layer is illustrated with examples of electrochemical oxidation and reversible reduction by boiling glycerol. The chemistry of iron in the interlayer is exemplified by the intercalation of Fe-cyanide complexes in hydrotalcite. This reaction may be used as a probe for the charge distribution in the interlayer.

The Clay Minerals Society has celebrated the twentieth anniversary of the first report on clay-modified electrodes (1983) by publishing its Workshop Lecture Series Vol. 10, edited by one of the most experienced specialists in the field of electrochemistry of clays. Progress in the field is highlighted. However, it is not only clay-modified electrodes which are discussed in this book. Electrochemical Properties of Clays summarizes efforts by both clay and chemical specialists to study, understand and use the electrochemical features of clay minerals.

result from interactions between electrically charged
particles, ordinary ions, and molecules of solvent. Flocculation and allied phenomena represent the effect of
ions and solvent upon the particles. Cataphoresis and
related effects are caused by interaction between particles
and solvent, although ions may play an important part
in producing the phenomena. The fabric of the clay and
