Marketing and sales are both activities aimed at increasing revenue. They are so closely intertwined that people often dont realize the difference between the two. Indeed, in small organizations, the same people typically perform both sales and marketing tasks. Nevertheless, marketing is different from sales and as the organization grows, the roles and responsibilities become more specialized.
Marketing
Customer orientation - Listens to and eventual accommodation of the target market and determine future needs
Sales---Customer orientation - makes customer demand match the products the company currently offers

In marketing we try to create a market for our product by informing its value (to those people whom we want to sell the product). In simple terms we can say that it is various forms of advertising. Even maintaining relationship with existing customer comes under marketing
Sales is the actual selling of the product. This could mean meeting customers, taking orders for the product, monitoring and analyzing our performance and completing the commercial transaction
Many companies see overlapping of some of these functions and create a department called Sales and Marketing
But in my view the most important person in the sales as well as marketing is the low level man on the spot (for example the salesman in the retail and FMCG sales and the associate who handles the reception counter in sales of services)
