Technically there are many difference. you may have come across INVERTER & UPS as there are even two different types of UPS too.
INVERTER has wide range of input power. take eg. from 170 volt ac - 270 volt ac.
whereas this range is brought down to 200-240 volt ac in UPS.
the change over time from electricity board supply power to battery converted power in inverter is on higher side. take for eg. its more than 10milisecond whereas in offline UPS its less than 5milisecond. and in online ups its 0 milisecond.

Online ups always runs on battery converted power. it doesnt work directly with mains power. if there is mains available it charges the battery. its output voltage is fix regardless to mains output voltage

Offline also known as line interactive UPS work on mains power at the same time it charges the battery two. as soon as power goes off it switch to battery converted power.its output voltage is same as mains input when available out is fix when mains fails.

same does t ...more

The purpose of ups is also uninterrupted power supply whenever there is power brake down and inverter also does the same power supply by converting dc into ac.
