We use the terms umbra and penumbra in daily life while describing the shadows seen during eclipses.
Umbra has its etymology in Latin meaning shadow, ghost, shade.
Penumbra = pen+umbra. This word also has its roots in Latin. Pen is derived from the Latin word paene meaning partial or almost. Hence penumbra means partial or incomplete shadow..

Umbra is the opaque, darker part of the shadow. The penubra is the semi-opaque, lighter part of the shadow. Usually the penumbra is smaller the the ubmbra, but the solar eclipse on an exception. Both are parts of shadows!!
