A leap year is a year containing one or more extra day than normal year. In the common calendar February in a leap year has 29 days instead of the usual 28 so the year lasts 366 days instead of the usual 365.

Usually a year comprises of 365 days and 6 hours but the extra 6 hours is excluded from accounts for the purpose of convinience while preparing calendars. And thus within a period of 4 yrs. this excluded 6 hrs. make one day(24 hrs) which is added with the shortest month February that year Which is called the leap year. And usually the year devided by 4 is a leap year(eg.2012/4=503.Hence 2012 will be a leap year having itz February being 29 days)

A Leap year has 366 days whereas a normal year has 365 days. A Leap year comes after four years. Actually it is not 365 days but 365 and 1/4 days intercalated to compensate for the quarter-day difference between an ordinary year and the astronomical year, hence Leap year has 366 days.
