In case of a commercial passenger jet you mention -- their average speed is about 500 knots or around 600 mph. It is due to the high altitude (around 35 to 45 thousand feet) - I witnessed Lufthansa airlines maintained a spped from 550 mph to 650 mph mostly ( while travelling from US to India.)

It varies from 820 km to 900 km/hr at an altitude between 30 to 39 thousand feet above the sea level--however flow of wind ,favourable or adverse , often determines the speed of the particular flight .Again type of the aircraft is also a factor -- Concorde uesd to fly at an average speed of 13000km /hour breaking the sound barrier and it was supersonic
