Life span depends on several factors:

1. Surge Protector - Do you have a surge protector that really works? This adds to the life of the TV.

2. Lightning - Do you turn TV and the switch on the surge protector when lightning is within 30 minutes of your home? Basically this means turn it off during a thunderstorm and wait 30 minutes for it to pass. Have your recorder in a separate outlet to keep it recording during the storm.

3. Lightning arrestor - Is your antenna, cable or satellite properly protected from lightning with the right lightning arrestor? If not get this fixed soon.

4. Brand - Yes some brands and some specific models last longer than others. The cheaper the TV (unless we are talking inflated prices due to purchase at a rental store) the shorter its average life span unless this is discontinued model that costs less than it once did.

The picture tube is the most vulnerable part of a television. The average life of a picture tube is said to be about 15 years. The life also depends on the usage. Moreover, some brands like SONY or Thompson are seen to have longer service life compared to other brands.

The CRT gives good performance upto 7 years for about 4-6 hours of use a day. But you can pull on fore 12-15 years
