The area of Uttarakhand is 55,845 square kilometers. In this context, it becomes mandatory to mention that Uttarakhand had been a part of the United Province of Agra and Awadh which later came to be known as United Province. Further, this United Province was renamed as Uttar Pradesh. But the present state of Uttarakhand came into existence when a part of Uttar Pradesh was culled out. This new state came to be known as Uttaranchal, which was later changed into Uttarakhand.
