In photography and cinematography, a telephoto lens is a specific type of a long-focus lens in which the physical length of the lens is shorter than the focal length.

Lens in camera are classified into normal lens, wide angle lens and tele lens .To focus objects at a distance and capture their images tele lens is preferred .By using tele lens the object gets little distorted .I prefer normal lens to minimize distortions . Wide angle covers the width of the image into a single frame but distortions cannot be avoided, I am a purist in photography so always use normal lens and my compositions always stands out .I have published many photos in various periodicals .Thank you for your good question. Tele lens is composed of few lens .also wide ankle and normal lens.
