Is it true that the best supporting actor award winning role of "Sherif Ali ibn el Kharish" in the film "Lawrence of Arabia" was offered to Dilip Kumar first and after his refusal was offered to other actors like "Alain Delon" etc prior to offering the role to Omar Sharriff?

The role was offered to many actors before Omar Sharif was cast. Horst Buchholz was the first choice, but had already signed on for the film One, Two, Three. Alain Delon had a successful screen test, but ultimately declined due to the brown contact lenses he would have had to wear. Then, I read somewhere that Mr. Dilip Kumar was considered most suitable and offered. According to my sources with whom I have been making enquiries about this matter, it appears Dilip Kumar refused for reasons known only to him. perhaps he did not want to shoot at I.S. Johar even in a movie act. This could be true because, Sharif, who was already a major star in the Middle East, was originally cast as Lawrence's guide Tafas, but after Dilip Kumar's alleged refusal , Sharif was shifted to the part of Ali.
