There are many products which are traded by way of paper. The issuer deposits the product in physical condition, say with the RBI or some other entity. For the equivalent papers (shares) are issued and they are traded on the exchange. These products are called Exchange Traded Funds or ETFs. Go to Investopedia. You will learn everything you need to know about the stock market there.

For small investors, it makes sense to invest in a gold exchange-traded fund (ETF). Gold ETFs invest in physical gold. The funds track the price of gold. The ETF route saves the investor from purchasing and keeping gold. You can buy and sell gold on stock exchanges at the wholesale price with good liquidity. Each unit of a gold ETF represents one gram of gold. You need to have a demat account to invest in a gold ETF.Answered by Sunidhi, 22 Jun '12 06:13 pm
