Madurai Mani Iyer (1912-1968), whose original name was Subramanian, was a Carnatic music singer during the first half of the 20th century. Madurai Mani Iyer is a Nada Yogi. Despite his physical disability, he had some distinct qualities. Sri Mani learnt music under Rajam Bhagavathar and Sri Muthiah Bhagavathar. Mani Iyer\'s performances in those days consisted of many rare Krithis and he sang apoorva ragas elaborately which puzzled his accompanists. Though he got appreciations from the critics, his accompanists were not comfortable with his style. In 1943, the Elites of Tanjore arranged for a public function to honour Madurai Mani Iyer with the unique title of Ganakaladhara. Mani Iyer was awarded the \'Sangeetha Kalanidhi\' title by the MUSIC ACADEMY for the year 1959. During March 1960, Sri Mani Iyer was awarded the \'Sangeeth Nataka Academy Award\' instituted by the Central Govt. Some of the raagas popularized by Sri Mani iyyer are:
1. Charukesi
2. Lathangi
3. Vachaspathi
4. Sar ...more
