When there was SAMUNDRAMANTHAN, poison had come out and all the daivas and assuras started running away and ultimately found out Lord Siva who was rquested and pleaded to save them, Lord Siva who is all magnanimous, happily consumed the poison and when Maa Parvathi saw it she tied a snake round his neck to stop the poison from going down, This area became blue/green and hence he is also called NEELA KANTA

He swallod the poison and blocked it in his throat itself. The throat became blue colour during samudra manthan. Neela is blue and Kanta is throat. So, he is known as Neelakanta

It is not Kanta it is Kanth (Galaa, neck) . He took a bath in the blue water after taking bath in white water for better shine like we immerse white clothes in blued water after a soap-wash.

At the time of sagar(sea) churning 14 different precious things have comeout......as per the agreement between the DEVA & RAKSHYAS.....they have to distribute the things among themselves.......by applying tricky, gods captured all good things and the things which will destroy the demons were handedover to them very tactfully........one thing while Churning that came out from the sea is KALAKUTA (a poisenous reptile) to which neither of one agreed to receive.....then Lord siva drunk the poision for the betterment of the creation......that\'s why as a mark his throught became blue and known as NEELAKANTHA.......
