An embedded system is a special-purpose computer system designed to perform a dedicated function.[1] Unlike a general-purpose computer, such as a personal computer, an embedded system performs one or a few pre-defined tasks, usually with very specific requirements, and often includes task-specific hardware and mechanical parts not usually found in a general-purpose computer.[1] Since the system is dedicated to specific tasks, design engineers can optimize it, reducing the size and cost of the product. Embedded systems are often mass-produced, benefiting from economies of scale.

Physically, embedded systems range from portable devices such as digital watches and MP3 players, to large stationary installations like traffic lights, factory controllers, or the systems controlling nuclear power plants. In terms of complexity embedded systems run from simple, with a single microcontroller chip, to very complex with multiple units, peripherals and networks mounted inside a large chassis or ...more

An embedded system is nothing but a small computer which is deditated or rather programmed to serve only one device. it includes a microprocessor working as cpu and with limited amount of Rom memory in which task specific operating system is programmed or burned and the microprocessor is set to work continiously executing the program loaded or burned into the memory. Embedded Systems size ranges from small handheld devices like scientific or general purpose calculators to large stationary installations like traffic lights, factory controllers, nuclearpowerplants etc. now a days the guided missiles etc are becoming smarter by the day this smartness comes from the embedded system that is used in them. other example include mouse it is also a kind of embedded system in which there is microcontroller whose job is to find where is your cursor right now on the screen or desktop what ever you call it. and other one is. some times embedded systems are used in real time applications and the soft ...more

An embedded system is any software system that must be designed on a platform different from the platform on which the system is intended to be deployed.

What is meant by platform? On the development side, platform typically refers to an operating system capable of hosting software development, such as Windows, Solaris, HP, etc. On the target side, the word platform refers to the devices on which the embedded system will be deployed.
