Island of China, off the SE coast, a Japanese territory (1895-1945). This island, the Pescadores, Queoy, Matsu, and other small island groups forming a political unit regarded as a province of China by the People's Republic of China but governed as a separate country by the Kuomintang since 1049 and officially called the Republic of China with capital Taipei.
