M.Phil. (Master of Philosophy ) is a research degree of recent origin ( say around 30 yrs back. It was to serve a stepping stone for more serious research degree Ph. D. Unfortunately it fell into disrepute, as the takers neither gained addl. knowledge nor had the requisite training and skill. Later, it became a way to avoid appearing part I of the Ph.D. course, recommended by Universities for scholars joining Ph. D. without M.Phil. Though UGC valued and devalued etc. this course, latest is that it cannot satisfy the criterion for lecturer in future. A NET qualification is considered much more and rightly so,as many M.Phil. degree holders acquired it as they preferred to be students for one more year (full time )or two more years (part time)instead of being unemployed. The course content is bit more on one of the main subjects of P.G. and some research methodology.

M.Phil. is a special research degree and only awarded by selected departments of a university (mostly in the fields of Arts, Social Sciences, Archeology, Philosophy and Theology). Admission to this program is pretty selective and primarily aimed at those students opting for an academic career.
